ARTIST STATEMENT
I am retired from the community arts specialist role of my ahupua’a ( land division) of Ko’olaupoko after spending 23 years in community, public, charter and private schools and sectors sharing, teaching. Not just art, but all the many things I an impressed upon living in the islands oceans, mountains, farmlands and lo’i. I feel compelled to express hope, honor the past, immerse myself in my natural surrounding and share its knowledge.
ABOUT the ARTIST
Meala conveys through her art ways of knowing and understanding our Ocean Nation world views. Art helps her express her internal mo’olelo through external expression. Visual literacy, she explains, through creative processes helps define our visions of how we see the world and our relationship to the environment. Through art she explores her Polynesian roots, history and cultural diversity.
Meala shares the spiritual essences that surround her environment through visual language and symbolism. A way to celebrate connection to life and place. Paying attention to kaona, metaphors, and ‘olelo, so important in understanding important in understanding language and culture. Culture through art. Maunalua Bay to Kailua is where Meala grew up. Waiahole is where she learned to malama ‘ãina, Waiahole to Punalu’u is where she farms lo’i, ‘awa and fruit trees with her family. Her genealogy reaches to before missionary contact in Hawaii and to the early founding families of America.
