About the Artist

Born in Honolulu in 1949, Russell Lowrey grew up in Hawaii and was educated at Punahou School and the University of Colorado.  He received his BFA in 1973 from the University of Denver. 

One of Russell Lowrey’s vivid childhood memories is of driving with his parents to the North Shore of Oahu – past the sleepy towns of Ka’a’awa, Punalu’u and Malaekahana. “Those rides were the most relaxing part of my life,”he recalls fondly. Today, Lowrey’s trademark island beachscape paintings in beautiful, soft hues reminiscent of pristine, tropical lagoons, preserve those boyhood images.

“I look at my paintings as windows to the landscape. They are fairly simplistic and peaceful,” states Lowrey. “I try to depict in them the tranquility of our island environment. Living amidst the beauty and nature that surrounds us with the hope that it will stay this way.”

Work

Lowrey’s works have been shown extensively in exhibits and private collections in Hawaii, Canada and Europe. They feature a unique combination of acrylic paints and oil pastels. The pastels travel well, are very ‘immediate’ and offer a wide range of colors. All important considerations for an artist like Lowrey who divides his time annually between Hawaii, and trips abroad. 

He pauses to further reflect on the importance of visual arts in his life and in a young person’s education. “When I think about how I got interested in visual arts, I immediately remember my art history teachers at Punahou,” he continues. “The presented great slideshows of trips they had taken to European museums and galleries. To me, that was visual arts because I was able to see what was being shown in Europe”.

Lowrey’s popular works grace the walls of nearly all of Hawaii’s largest financial institutions and numerous hotels. He also has shown his painting at many art shows, both nationally and internationally.
