About the Artist
Susan McGovney Hansen ( 1933-2011) was a freelance painter in watercolor, oil and pastels. Born in California she went to UCLA and Art Center School of Design. Susan moved to Hawaiʻi in 1963. Her works featuring polynesian figures and still life were painted in her home studio on the windward side of Oʻahu.
“My paintings portray the strengh, grace and gentleness of the Hawaiians honoring their culture with dignity and respect.”
When asked what she is most proud of, it is without a doubt her three children. “Raising them was the most important thing in my life but when they were grown I returned to the studio and launched my career. My intent is to engage the viewer not only visually but intellectually as well.”
One of her favorite subjects is her good friend and mentor Hawaiian musician Mihana Souza. She is in many of her paintings.
Hansen’s commissioned artworks are throughout Hawaii, from several major hotels to the Hawaii State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, Honolulu City Hall, central branch of the Bank of Hawaii (Honolulu), Oahu Country Club, and Pacific Club (Honolulu). She also taught watercolor and figure painting at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and was a member of the Hawaii Watercolor Society, Windward Artists’ Guild, Artists’ Group, and Hawaii Artists’ League.
