About the Artist

Rosalie was an acclaimed artist in the islands for over 50 years. Since 1959 Rosalie Prussing has captured a whimsical view of Hawaii in her people and scenes around the Islands. She was one of the Founders of the Windward Artists Guild, a non-profit, volunteer, member guild, organized in 1960 by a group of Windward artists.

Rosalie Prussing has painted all her life. She painted as a child and during her years as an art student in Los Angeles. She painted in the spare moments she could find as a housewife and mother of four in Hawai’i, where she moved in 1959 to follow her husband’s career. Even when she went back to work, as an art teacher and fabric designer, she’d come home, turn on classical music, tune out her family and paint. “I used to really agonize over those paintings.” she said.

When she retired she decided to paint only for fun.

“My work is not the kind of art you’d enter in a juried show, but it isn’t commercial art either. It’s just me having a wonderful time. It amazes me how much demand there is for it.”

She has won many awards and is truly gifted in her ability to add laughter to her creations. Look for the Myna Bird she hides in most of her work.

Rosalie passed away at age 87 in November 2011. Her family continues her legacy by sharing her art with many people from around the world.
