It’s one thing to imagine something nobody’s ever seen before in a tradition-grounded craft like quilting. It’s a different thing to actually make something new.

Mary Downes, quilt maker, map observer, thinker, fun to talk to, always growing, always imagining, creator of a whole new genre we never would have thought of in a thousand years!

Mahalo Mary!

Mary Downes is an art quilter living and working in Kailua, Hawaii. She started quilting more than 25 years ago, making Hawaiian quilts completely by hand. Her work has evolved into machine applique pieces to hand-painted wholecloth quilts.

Mary’s newest projects focus on the theme of “sense of place”: land maps, aeronautical and nautical charts, native birds and fish, iconic architecture.
Her work is carried by galleries in Hawaii, Alaska and other points in the Pacific Northwest.

Quilting is the term given to the process of joining a minimum of three layers of fabric together either through stitching manually using a needle and thread, or mechanically with a sewing machine or specialised longarm quilting system.
