About the Artist
Cyan is a painter of Filipino-Japanese heritage currently living and working in Oahu. He was introduced to illustration and street art at a young age. Garma carried a sketchbook for most of his life. While he was attending Azusa Pacific University in California and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Garma was introduced to various painting traditions including Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Pop Art. These diverse influences played a significant role in shaping his work. They were prompting him to explore the intersection of “high” and “low” art genres.
Upon returning to Oahu, Garma experienced a profound shift in perspective, finding inspiration in the island’s rich natural environment and vibrant cultural tapestry. This newfound connection to his surroundings is vividly reflected in his paintings, which serve as a response to the beauty and vitality of the island.
