About the Artist

Albert was born in the Netherlands to a tropical agriculturist from Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony at that time, and a mother from Holland.
They moved to Indonesia when Albert was two months old.
With the Indonesian Revolution from 1945 to 1949 they had to move back to the Netherlands and decided to emigrate to the US. After settling in Duluth, Minnesota his father accepted a job at the Dole Plantation and the family moved to Hawai’i. Living on O’ahu, Maui and Molokai, Albert finally attended and graduated from the Mid-Pacific Institute.

He’s really grateful that he had the chance to live on several islands here in Hawai’i and got to learn so many things about the people and the culture.

His interest in woodturning started when he went on hikes with his father and a friend who was a woodturner, collecting large pieces of local woods and watching him turning them into beautiful bowls.

After he retired, he set up his own woodturning studio and is now following his life long passion.

Cook Pine

The Cook Pine is ypically planted as an ornamental and street tree in warm temperate climates. This is the only widely grown conifer in the Pacific Islands. Individuals always lean wherever they are planted. In the Northern Hemisphere they lean south and in the Southern Hemisphere they lean north. In Hawai‘i, Cook pines lean five to seven degrees southeast, on average.

More than 2 million board feet of Cook pine have been harvested from Hawaii and Maui. The wood is strong but light in weight. It is usually quite knotty and is used as a knotty pine paneling, turned bowls and bracelets. It has also been made into a veneer.
