About the Artist
Albert was born in the Netherlands to a tropical agriculturist from Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony at that time, and a mother from Holland.
They moved to Indonesia when Albert was two months old.
With the Indonesian Revolution from 1945 to 1949 they had to move back to the Netherlands and decided to emigrate to the US. After settling in Duluth, Minnesota his father accepted a job at the Dole Plantation and the family moved to Hawai’i. Living on O’ahu, Maui and Molokai, Albert finally attended and graduated from the Mid-Pacific Institute.
He’s really grateful that he had the chance to live on several islands here in Hawai’i and got to learn so many things about the people and the culture.
His interest in woodturning started when he went on hikes with his father and a friend who was a woodturner, collecting large pieces of local woods and watching him turning them into beautiful bowls.
After he retired, he set up his own woodturning studio and is now following his life long passion.
Here we are offering select pieces of his wonderful woodwork.
Kou
Kou is an excellent tree for a roomy landscape. They can get to be medium-large trees and may not be suitable for small urban yards that cannot accommodate a height and canopy spread of 25-35 feet. Kou grows in the coastal regions of the Hawaiian islands. It is considered a rare wood. Kou was prized by Hawaiian royalty for food use: poi bowls, calabashes and utensils as Kou does not impart a taste to food. Legend says the Gods choose who can work in Kou.
