In honor of this event and the Kermodes’ visit, Nohea Gallery will be showing his bowls for the months of March and April and hosting a reception for Jerry and his wife, collaborator and business partner, Deborah, on Sunday, March 1 at 4:00 P.M.
Nohea Gallery was the first gallery to show the Kermode’s bowls, beginning in 1995. Before he left the Islands, Jerry co-founded Honolulu Woodturners in March of 2000. This visit brings them full circle and is most exciting given the history behind their visit.
The Kermode’s lived on O’ahu for 22 years, having returned to their native California in 2000. While here they were very active
in the community, first as remodelers and furniture makers, and then as well known bowl turners. They were members of the Pacific Handcrafters Guild and two co-op galleries with fellow artists Bob McWilliams and Janet Holaday, among others. Deborah was also on the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Drama Education and an accomplished hula dancer, while Jerry sat on the Board of Directors of the Hawai’i Youth Symphony. Their son, Walker, graduated from Kailua High School.
The Jerry Kermode School of Woodturning began in Kailua in 1986 and continues today at their home studio in Sebastopol, California. Jerry has become a much sought after teacher and demonstrator, with bowls in collections world-wide. This trip begins his international notoriety as a teacher; From here he goes on to events in Australia and New Zealand.
