About the Artist
Noreen Naughton was born in 1945 in Schenectady (New York), moved to Hawai‘i in 1948 and lives in Kaneohe. She studied at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa receiving a BA in 1967, a MEd in 1974 and a MFA in 1979 and post-graduate studies at the International School of Art in Umbria (Italy).
She is Professor Emeritus of Art at the Kapi‘olani Community College (Honolulu), University of Hawai‘i, where she taught Drawing, Painting and Color Theory, served as visual arts coordinator and initiated the New Media Arts program. Noreen has been a professional artist in Hawai‘i for over forty years, primarily a painter of landscape.
Her painting style exists between representational and abstraction. Noreen responds to light and atmospheric conditions, which she finds abstract the landscape into incredible configurations suggesting other imagery and aesthetic sensations. She has participated in numerous solo, group, juried and invitational exhibitions in Hawai‘i. She has had many reviews of her works in magazines and newspapers in Hawai‘i, has received important awards and participated in residencies, public lectures. Noreen even had time to be a Violoncellist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.
