Gordon Tang’s traditional Hawaiian shapes are widely appreciated by collectors of Hawaiiana both for functional and decorative purposes. A number of people collect his bowls for poi supper, luckies!

‘Umeke

‘Umeke ‘ai is an honored implement in a Hawai’i home, for through the ceremony of eating poi one at a time from the bowl at the center. The ‘umeke ‘ai filled with kalo (taro) is the means of survival of the people of Hawai`i Nei.

‘Umeke la’au is the Hawai’i name for these containers or calabashes of wood, which were used for the storage, transport and serving of food in various stages of preparation.

‘Ohai

‘Ohai or Sesbania tomentosa is a variable species. It is usually a low, spreading shrub with horizontal or arching branches. It can also have a treelike habit up to 15 feet tall. In the wild, a single plant can cover a large area, but in cultivation it will tend to be under 10 feet in diameter. Sesbania tomentosa used to to be widespread in dry areas at elevations below 750 metres. It is growing on all of the main islands of Hawaii. However, destruction of these habitats  such as off-road vehicles, habitat disturbance, residential development in coastal areas, cattle & goats, has greatly diminished its natural occurrence within its former range.
