About the Artist

After retiring from a 30+ year career in optometry focused heavily on geriatric patient care, Kevin Lui longed to keep busy by doing something with his hands. He set his sights on woodturning after completing an introductory course at the Honolulu Museum of Art in 2017.

From that experience, Kevin joined the Honolulu Woodturners club to further his knowledge by primarily meeting people with a whole lot more skill and expertise than him! Also augmenting his understanding of woodturning has been courses he has taken on the mainland. It has impressively broadened his concept of what is possible. Kevin now specializes in hollow form (enclosed) vessels often fashioned with touches of the unexpected.

Sharing his creations is Kevin’s way of sharing his passion for wood. He encourages you to take pleasure in the smell, the feel, and the appearance of wood. All unique and wonderful!

Norfolk Pine

Norfolk Pine was introduced to the Hawaiian islands originally by Captain Cook. The tree is endemic to Norfolk Island, a small island in the Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and New Caledonia. Cook noted the presence of large forests of tall, straight trees that appeared to be suitable for use as masts and yards for sailing ships.

It is a slow growing tree, reaching a height of 160–210 ft. Its trunk has straight vertical and symmetrical branches. Norfolk Pine is light brown, with red or yellow variations.  Norfolk Pine is a soft wood, making it easy to work with.
