Katharena Rentumis “Wandering Tides” Mixed media on Canvas 12″ x 9″

Through the process of creating, I’m interested in elements of time and transformation. With repetitious mark-making, I accumulate abstract images that are reminiscent of underwater scapes, microscopic universes, celestial bodies, and new topographies. I’m interested in mapping imagined hybrid spaces through my mixed media works. Time and visual accumulation are key components of my artwork.

 I apply layers of acrylic paint and water that are evaporated into a field or landscape of color as a composition is formed over time like the lava fields growing with each volcanic eruption layering new earth. I’m interested in creating growing patterns that disrupt and cover the painted surface and speak to the process of submerging and revealing while ultimately forming one whole.
