About the Artist

Alexandra was born in 1951 in New York City, New York. She first studied Fine Arts at California Institute of the Arts and holds Bachelor and Master of Art Education degrees from Prescott College. Later she studied portraiture with Daniel Greene at his studio in New York and watercolor with Don Andrews.

For over forty years she has lived in Gold Beach with her husband, Frank Martinez, with whom she has three grown children and four grandchildren. They now spend part of the year in Honolulu, Hawaii.

1970s

In the late 1970’s, Alexandra operated a small graphic design and silkscreen printing business. After the birth of her first child in 1978, Alexandra turned her attention to raising a family. During those child-rearing years, she kept her involvement with art alive through her children’s art education and attending a weekly gathering of artists to draw from live models, which she continues to do.

1990s

In the 1990s, her series of paintings of women who have survived breast cancer were incorporated into advertisements for the local hospital on the back of the local telephone book.

From 1995 through 2001, she organized a summer art camp for children. After receiving multiple art degrees and then teaching Art at Gold Beach High School for five years until 2002, she turned her attention to painting full time while giving workshops through Southwestern Oregon Community College.

Her current focus on Alla Prima portraiture continues to evolve through her weekly figure painting group. This award winning artist has exhibited in national and international exhibitions and holds Signature Member Status in the Watercolor Society of Oregon, Hawaii Watercolor Society, Northwest Watercolor Society and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.
