Albert Koorenhof

About the Artist

Albert was born in the Netherlands to a tropical agriculturist from Indonesia, which was a Dutch colony at that time, and a mother from Holland.
They moved to Indonesia when Albert was two months old.
With the Indonesian Revolution from 1945 to 1949 they had to move back to the Netherlands and decided to emigrate to the US. After settling in Duluth, Minnesota his father accepted a job at the Dole Plantation and the family moved to Hawai’i. Living on O’ahu, Maui and Molokai, Albert finally attended and graduated from the Mid-Pacific Institute.

He’s really grateful that he had the chance to live on several islands here in Hawai’i and got to learn so many things about the people and the culture.

His interest in woodturning started when he went on hikes with his father and a friend who was a woodturner, collecting large pieces of local woods and watching him turning them into beautiful bowls.

After he retired, he set up his own woodturning studio and is now following his life long passion.

Here we are offering select pieces of his wonderful woodwork.

False Kamani

Terminalia Catappa is often mistaken for what is known as true Hawaiian Kamani, Calophyllum inophyllum because of their similar appearance.

The wood is moderately dense and strong. It works and finishes well and can have a pleasant almond odor when being worked. The wood color can have beautiful chattoyance much like true kamani displays, but false kamani usually has blonder wood with red and pink tones.

To care for your False Kamani Calabash keep it out of bright sunlight and water, and dust it occasionally for many years of enjoyment.
