About the Artist

Rochelle Lum

by Helen Kitchen Branson

Hawaii artist Rochelle Lum likes to have fun—especially when she is adding an animal to her clay menagerie. Her fun began when she made an elephant in kindergarten and has continued throughout her life with the creation of portraits of many animals she had as childhood pets.

She is also inspired by images from Asian and Hawaiian legends, which she has recreated in sculptures and on teapots.Born in Honolulu, Lum attended Mills College in Oakland, California, receiving a bachelor of arts in Art Technique/Fine Arts. Before returning to Hawaii in 1981, she worked for various publishing/graphic design/advertising companies.

She has since taught adult classes at the Linekona Art Center at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Her sculptures are pinched, coiled and slab built, then surfaced with raku glazes and/or commercial underglazes and glazes. According to Lum, the rough texture of the surface expresses the quality of the animals’ fur.“It’s Raining Cats and Dogs,” a solo exhibition of Lum’s work, was presented recently at Bibelot Gallery in Honolulu.

“People ask me what I’m going to do after I retire from making ceramics. I couldn’t come up with anything better. I have a student who’s 93 years old who comes to class in a wheelchair. She says she still loves doing it.”
