About the Artist

John Berthiaume is a woodworker who moved to Hawai’i from his home state of Michigan in 1978. While taking advantage of the many beautiful types of wood available in Hawai’i, he has developed his passion and talent for woodworking. He specializes in designing and crafting jewelry boxes, bowls and furniture from locally sourced wood.

Commonly known as Red Cedar, toon (also spelled tun) or toona, is a genus in the mahogany family, Meliaceae. It is a large hardwood that grows in the coastal rainforest areas of eastern Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. The heartwood color ranges from pinkish to a darker reddish brown. Paler sapwood is clearly demarcated from the heartwood.

The grain is generally straight to slightly interlocked, with a coarse, uneven texture. It has good natural luster. Commonly it is used for decorative applications as for furniture, cabinetry, veneer as well as musical instruments (guitar tops), and boatbuilding. Due to the restrictions in recent years on the use of natively-grown American mahogany, it has become one of the common mahogany replacements in electric guitar manufacturing.
