Surfrider Koa wood watch by Pono Woodworks
The silicone band has a very fine feel and is substantial (without being heavy), soft to the touch, and comfortable. The watch itself has a stainless steel body, mineral crystal glass, a Japanese Miyota movement which is the kind used is Citizen watches, and a beautiful curly koa face. It is water resistant to 10 atmospheres.
“Our goal was to create a beautifully simple and robust Koa watch using only the highest quality materials.
The watch is rated water resistant to 10ATM.
The Surfrider’s face measures 42mm and is 10.25mm thick. This is a great size that is not too large and will fit most people without looking bulky but still having a prescense. The band makes it one of the most comforable watches I’ve owned and looks good in and out of the water.
Here’s the info on our Koa wood…
The Koa tree is truly the king of the Hawaiian woods and lends itself to create everything that is wonderful about the Hawaiian Islands and its culture. From the ancient Hawaiian outrigger canoes to the spawning of the first ancient surfboards and ukulele, Koa deserves its place at the heart of the Hawaiian culture. Because of its amazing beauty, it adorns the palace walls and is one of the most expensive woods on the planet. Koa literally means warrior in the hawaiian language and has come to symbolize strength, fearlessness, bravery, bold action, and the warrior spirit.
The curly Koa we select for our watches ranges in color from light and dark browns, to reds, golds and a compilation of them all. The curl of the wood creates an undulation of grain when in bright light and moved back and forth. Koa’s characteristic of chatoyancy or reflective nature is truly amazing and rarely found in wood. It is usually a characteristic reserved for jewels.”
