About the Wood

“Koa is the largest endemic tree in Hawai‘i–the species exists naturally nowhere else in the world. Koa is the fastest growing of Hawaii’s valuable hardwoods. It can grow as much as an inch in diameter per year, reaching 100 feet in height, attaining a trunk diameter of 5 feet or more. It was historically the material of choice for carved ocean-going canoes. Koa wood is the most prized cabinet and furniture wood in Hawai‘i. Colors range from light brown to deep red/brown hues. Highly figured koa is sought after for use in fine furniture, musical instruments, crafts, gunstocks, and knife handles. Koa has weight and strength properties similar to black walnut. It is a moderately heavy wood (specific gravity .55). It is stable, works well, and takes an exceptionally rich, deeply reflective glow when finished with oils and modern varnish or laquer.” 1

Thank you for considering these Hawaiian Koa urns. As they are in the shop for sale as well as available online here, we sometimes run low on urns on hand unexpectedly. Please send an email us with your required date. It does take us a day to pack and that is not always reflected in the USPS or UPS date range.
Custom engraved koa plaques are available for text or images as well.

Because these are available for sale in our shops every day,  the urns in our photos are often sold there.  These photos are examples of what our urns look like. Infrequently, we run out and must wait  for replacement urns to be made.  Please write us at noheagallery at advising us of your time frame, and we will send you photos of urns that are in the shop today.

Each urn is built to make the most of the piece of koa the craftsman is using, so there are some small variations in size. Koa urns are available in these sizes today:

Item#      price       h        w           d
2105-ul.1    365     9x6x5.5 approximately  large koa urn can accommodate remains for a person weighing 235 lbs
2105-uml  275    8 x5  x 5 approximately,   Medium lg koa urn can accommodate remains of a person weighing up to 160 lbs

The bottom is attached with four removable screws.  To take the bottom off, unscrew three of the four screws completely and one partially.  Lift the bottom off using the partially attached screw.

The wood used to make these urns is  solid Hawaiian koa, found only in the Hawaiian Islands.  Other woods are also available, including monkeypod which can be very beautiful.

Reforestation efforts are ongoing on the Big Island and on Maui, to recover the species from the devastation caused by clear-cutting for ranching and more recently, invasive forest animals.

Sizes for the urns vary slightly from one to the other. Dimensions in the additional information tab are the approximate size when packed for shipment.

Thank you for considering this koa urn for your loved one. Aloha.
