About the Artist

Chris Rollins – Functional Woodworks
I started working with wood when I was a teenager growing up in Maine and quickly developed a passion for woodworking.
And I have continued working with wood in various ways for the past 50 years. From a custom home builder to a custom wood worker.
I enjoy spending hours in my shop letting a piece of wood tell me their story through turning pieces on a lathe or creating custom pieces of furniture, specialty railings, doors and many more items.
My pieces reflect this blending between me and the wood allowing the woods life to shine through for many more years.
I believe that there is no better way to spend a day then with a wonderful piece of wood.

Koa:

Uses
Ancient Hawaiians were using the koa trunks to build waʻa (dugout outrigger canoes) and papa heʻe nalu (surfboards).  The reddish wood is very similar in strength and weight to that of Black Walnut (Juglans nigra). Because of its specific gravity of 0.55, Koa is sought for use in wood carving and furniture. Koa is also a tonewood. It is often used in the construction of ukuleles, acoustic guitars, and Weissenborn-style Hawaiian steel guitars.
