Large Koa urn with splines
This large koa urn accommodates the cremated remains of a person weighing approximately 235 pounds.
These are photos of some recent urns made in this design. The splines are cut to fit into four notches on each long edge. They are an antique furniture building technique designed to make things that last.

About the Wood
“Koa is the largest endemic tree in Hawai‘i–the species exists naturally nowhere else in the world. Koa is the fastest growing of Hawaii’s valuable hardwoods. It can grow as much as an inch in diameter per year, reaching 100 feet in height, attaining a trunk diameter of 5 feet or more. It was historically the material of choice for carved ocean-going canoes. Koa wood is the most prized cabinet and furniture wood in Hawai‘i. Colors range from light brown to deep red/brown hues. Highly figured koa is sought after for use in fine furniture, musical instruments, crafts, gunstocks, and knife handles. Koa has weight and strength properties similar to black walnut. It is a moderately heavy wood (specific gravity .55). It is stable, works well, and takes an exceptionally rich, deeply reflective glow when finished with oils and modern varnish or laquer.” 1
Because these are available for sale in our shops every day, the urns in our photos are often sold there. These photos are examples of what our urns look like, but we probably won’t be shipping the urn in the photo above. We will gladly send photos of urns that are in the shop currently, for your selection. Infrequently, we run out and must wait for replacement urns to be made. Please write us at noheagallery at gmail.com advising us of your time frame, and we will send you photos of urns that are in the shop today.
Each urn is built to make the most of the piece of koa the craftsman is using, so there are some small variations in size. Koa urns are available in these sizes today:

Reforestation efforts are ongoing on the Big Island and on Maui, to recover the species from the devastation caused by clear-cutting for ranching and more recently, invasive forest animals.
Sizes for the urns vary slightly from one to the other. Dimensions in the additional information tab are the approximate size when packed for shipment.
Thank you for considering this koa urn for your loved one. Aloha.
