About the Artist

Thomas Matsuda was born and raised in Kaimuki, Oahu. He graduated from Kalani High School. Later he attended Honolulu Community College and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a B.S Degree in Agriculture from the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR).

He is married to Toni K. Matsuda. They have 2 Children, son Travis Matsuda (Lisa), daughter Taryn Kumamoto (Mark) and 6 grandchildren.

In 2010 he completed an introductory bowl turning class from instructor Andy Cole. After that he purchased a Jet 1642 lathe and started turning bowls. Currently he’s using a Powermatic 3520b lathe.

The first bowls he turned he gave away to co-workers, friends and associates for occasions like retirement, appreciation, graduation, birthdays or other ceremonial events.

He turned woods like Norfolk Island Pine, Milo, Kamani, Mango, Koa, Paperbark, Pak-Lan, Mahogany in conventional and Natural edge rims, and calabash and salad bowl configurations.

Thomas is a member of the Honolulu Wood Turners. His Mentor is Carl Sherry

Mahalo for purchasing a beautiful wood piece from Nohea Gallery.
In caring for the item, please note that wood and water are not a good mix and direct sunlight could fade the wood.

Kou

Kou is an excellent tree for a roomy landscape. It was prized by Hawaiian royalty for food use: poi bowls, calabashes and utensils as Kou does not impart a taste to food. Legend says the Gods choose who can work in Kou.
