Koa Urn with Splines
This koa urn design is made with four inset splines on each vertical edge. Splines are a woodworking technique used in antique fine furniture to make something last for a very long time, sometimes hundreds of years. The spline is inset into a routed space cut to fit it perfectly. It increases the glue surface area and strengthens the joinery of the vertical edge.
This koa urn design is accessed from a removable panel that is screwed in to the bottom of the urn. To remove the bottom panel, unscrew three of the four screws, keeping them handy. Then, unscrew the fourth screw most of the way. You can use that screw, which would still be screwed into the lid but not the urn itself, to lift the panel from the urn.
About the wood: “Koa is the largest endemic tree in Hawai‘i–the species exists naturally nowhere else in the world. It is the fastest growing of Hawaii’s valuable hardwoods. It can grow as much as an inch in diameter per year, reaching 100 feet in height, attaining a trunk diameter of 5 feet or more. It was historically the material of choice for carved ocean-going canoes. Koa wood is the most prized cabinet and furniture wood in Hawai‘i. Colors range from light brown to deep red/brown hues. Highly figured koa is sought after for use in fine furniture, musical instruments, crafts, gunstocks, and knife handles. Koa has weight and strength properties similar to black walnut. It is a moderately heavy wood (specific gravity .55). It is stable, works well, and takes an exceptionally rich, deeply reflective glow when finished with oils and modern varnish or laquer.” 1
Sizes for the urns vary slightly from one to the other. Dimensions in the additional information tab are the approximate size when packed for shipment. Once you have placed your order please specify if you’d look like to see the other urns we have available in that size, and we will send you a photo of the variety of color and curl in the wood.
When time permits, we can also laser engrave on the urn itself, or laser engrave on a koa plaque that can be affixed later.
Thank you for considering this koa urn for your loved one.
