About the Artist

Liz Train grew up on the island of Kaua‘i. Her mother and father were both painters and had a family gallery, “The Spouting Horn Studio”, on the road to the Spouting Horn near Poipu. She fell in love with clay at age four and began to make batik fabrics as a teenager. Liz has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in ceramics and a Master in Fine Arts degree in fiber arts from the University of Hawai‘i.

She currently teaches adult classes in fiber arts and weaving at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. As an advanced level Teaching Artist she works with the Hawai‘i State Art Museum on Art Bento outreach projects. She has also worked with the SFCA’s Artists in the Schools program and has taught art at many elementary schools in Hawai‘i. Liz also teaches children’s art classes after school at Noelani Elementary School. In addition to fiber art, Liz enjoys working with ceramics, fused glass, printmaking and mixed media. Her work has been included in many juried and group exhibits and is in the collection of the SFCA and the Honolulu Museum of Art as well as many private collections.

Artist’s Statement

Many of my works are about the island landscape, the jungles and oceans, animals and fish, the things that give me great joy. My vision of the world is rather child-like and naive and it is this vision that I try to communicate through my artwork. My work is more about play than struggle, both the making and the viewing should be an enjoyable experience.
