About the Artist

Frank Andrews has been accumulating a growing following as a sculptor for over twenty years. A second career following his sojourn as a college teacher. His sculpture currently focuses on two primary themes:

Adaptations of the forms of prehistoric rock art. Derived from petroglyphs and cave paintings found in the American Southwest and in Hawaii, these welded copper wall hangings and fountains express the elegance and mystery of stone-age artistic expression while maintaining anthropological accuracy.

Sculptural interpretation of dancing figures

Sculptural interpretation of dancing figures, capturing the essence of movement in static creations. He works in bronze and in cement. Creating slender, lyrical human figures ranging in size form two feet tall to life-size. He also adapts these figures into water fountains, which are sculptured in welded copper.

The petroglyph sculptures are made from copper tubing, bent into shape, hammered flat and carefully welded with a copper alloy coating to them their irridescent colorings. They include images of dancing gods, hunters and animals, among many others. He visits the sites, photographs and sketches the rock face and then returns to his studio to isolate the most expressive image from the myriad petroglyph figures.

Today he lives and works in Santa Fe and divides his time between there and the Hawaiian Islands. His work can be found on Maui at The Village Galleries.

Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, as a form of rock art.

Petroglyph figures chipped with stone tools into smooth pahoehoe lava flows can be found on all Hawaiian islands near coastlines along prehistoric trails. Most of the images were left behind by ancient Hawaiians.

This collection of limited edition welded copper sculpture by artist Frank Andrews is derived from on-site drawings and photographs for anthropological accuracy. The figures are selected to recreate Hawaiian prehistoric rock art. Each piece comes ready to mount on a wall in your home.
