Curly koa treasure chest by Doc Valles 15 h x 26 w x 17 d
Our friend Doc is a real life Superman; as a firefighter on Oahu’s North Shore, he has fished countless victims out of harms way in giant surf, saved untold numbers and trained countless young firefighters who hold him in very high regard, as we do too.
For several years now, he’s let us know that each chest he made could well be the last. The time has finally come. He is really and truly done with making his unique and beautiful koa furniture. The price of wood to replace what he had on hand has increased so much that even if he was willing to make another, the materials cost would in his view put the price out of reach. So with gratitude, we share these last three with you.
The trim wood on each is a contrasting wood. The interior contains aromatic cedar wood.
Each is spectacular and each is different. One is not koa but curly mango. Please do check in with us before buying online to make sure that the one you choose is still available, as everything here is available for sale in the shop and may be purchased right before you click the last button. We try to keep these pages updated regularly but it’s not instantaneous.
Our thanks to Doc, and good wishes as he enjoys coaching his granddaughter’s soccer league on the North Shore. Mahalo nui for all the beauty, Doc.
From Wikipedia: Acacia koa is a species of flowering tree in the pea family. It is endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The highest populations are on Hawaiʻi, Maui and Oʻahu. Its name in the Hawaiian language, koa, also signifies bravery, boldness, fearlessness, or warriors, na koa.
The highly prized figured wood known as curly koa is found in approximately 10% of trees. Sometimes the trait is genetically passed along, and sometimes curly loa is caused by physical or environmental conditions such as pressure or compression curl found under a heavy branch.
Reforestation efforts are ongoing on the Big Island and on Maui, to recover the species from the devastation caused by clearcutting for ranching and more recently, invasive forest ungulates.
