Carl Sherry Sugi Pine Calabash 7.25″ x 7.25″

This sugi pine bowl is a favorite of our whole team.  The fragrance is lovely and the figuring in the wood reminds us of mountains in the mists.  The tree is a Japanese species that was brought here and grew here in the islands.  We imagine who may have planted it and what they were thinking of, so long ago.

Oahu craftsman Carl Sherry was born and raised in Manoa Valley on the island of Oahu, and attended Honolulu Community College. He spent his adult life working to help others through job training and workforce training. Nohea Gallery is honored to share his work with you.

Carl is dedicated to providing quality woodturnings of beautiful Hawaiian woods, and is especially known for his extraordinarily fine finish. As an artist, he always strives to make “that perfect bowl” and appreciates that others enjoy his work.

His first wood project was a Koa rocking chair, but when Carl noticed that people were asking for the cast-off curly wood from projects to make pens, he learned to turn pens on a lathe. Bowls were the natural progression from there.

“Sugi, Japanese Cedar, often called Sugi pine, is an aromatic softwood native to Japan. The sapwood is white or yellow, with reddish brown heartwood. The wood is light (specific gravity .41). It has strength properties similar to western red cedar, and is suitable for aromatic drawer linings. It has traditionally been one of the most important timbers of Japan, and was planted by the Hawai‘i Division of Forestry between 1910 and 1960. Use of Sugi in decorative items is growing.” 1

The tree this bowl was made of grew on Oahu, though the species is Japanese.

To care for your bowl by Carl Sherry, keep it out of bright sunlight and water, and dust it occasionally for many years of enjoyment.

The dimensions in the item description are for the bowl itself; dimensions under ‘additional information’ tab includes packing size when this item is packaged for shipment, mahalo!
