Brenda Cablayan original painting Across the Marsh © 18 x 24
Kawainui Marsh played an important role in the history of the islands. Historians say that it was the primary reason that Kind Kamehameha conquered Oahu, as the kalo and fish that were cultivated at Kawainui fed a population close to today’s population of Oahu. Kamehameha himself was known to get into the lo’i and help the community with the cultivation process. This involves getting knee-deep in the rich mud of the lo’i, cutting the huli and replanting the keiki kalo.
If you’d like to learn more about current efforts to preserve and educate about Kawainui Marsh, please visit our friends at Ahahui Malama I Ka Lokahi. Hawaii is lucky they are working to malama this precious natural resource.
Brenda Cablayan is a contemporary painter who lives and works on the Windward side of Oahu. She has just brought us this painting.
